This year, over the days 1st.-5th. of November, the annual Iceland Airwaves Music Festival will be held for the 18th time both in Reykjavík and Akureyri. If you ever needed an extra reason to visit Iceland, other than its amazing nature, now is the chance to soak up our culture as well.
This year you will have the chance to see great artists such as Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Sons, Sigrid, Mura Masa, Billy Bragg, Ásgeir, Michael Kiwanuka, Gus Gus, Vök, Mammút, Emiliana Torrini and The Colorist, Glowie, Fufanu and many more.
The venues in Reykjavík are spread over downtown Reykjavík with two big shows, Fleet Foxes and Ásgeir, in Reykjavík’s greatest and distinguished landmarks, Harpa, which has been chosen as one of the best concert halls of the new millennium by Gramophone Magazine.
Check out the exploding rap scene in Iceland with artists such as Aron Can, Emmsjé Gauti, Reykjavíkurdætur, Úlfur Úlfur, Joey Christ, Birnir, Flóni, Herra Hnetusmjör, Alexander Jarl, GKR, KÁ-AKÁ and our youngest and most awesome new duo JóiPé X Króli who just released an album Gerviglingur on Spotify which is breaking all kinds of records. You’ll get the most of the rap scene at the Reykjavík Art Museum on Wednesday and Thursday, and then in Akureyri on Thursday and Friday.
Moses Hightower is another awesome Icelandic band you must see. These neo-soul R&B-funk masters just released an album called Fjallaloft and you will be amazed by their instrumental talents and beautiful voices. You will catch them in Gamla Bíó on Wednesday among other great artists such as Högni, who you may or may not know from the bands Hjaltalín and Gus Gus.
For great music with a bonus cuteness overload, make sure you visit the Fríkirkjan venue on Saturday to see Lára Rúnars, Sóley, Mahalia and JFDR + Pascal Pinon. The latest is a solo project of the talented Jófríður Ákadóttir, member of Pascal Pinon, GANGLY and Samaris.
