The initial rental went smoothly enough although it was 4:50 am and only one person was available at rental counter. Our vehicle was already pre-arranged while the couple who went before had seemingly endless decisions so make that took 45 minutes during which an anxious Englishman wanted to drop off his vehicle quickly and the young man looked at us sadly and asked if we were in a hurry. I said we are very tired but of course that took 25 more minutes. Then we asked about getting any kind of breakfast and he directs us to a "bakery" but it was not open yet and had empty trays of Dunkin Donuts to stare at. Adding the surprise $3000 deposit for not taking your insurance even though our credit card covers it made for a rating of 2.0. But now move ahead to Monday which is a national holiday and we are to return car at 2:30 pm at Reykjavik office. So we are 7 minute drive to port to get on our Windstar cruise by 4:00. We arrive to the office around 2:45 and door is locked and place is empty. Panic! Go to nearest gas station and he shows us another office open behind him but it was Reykjavik Cars. There 2 nice girls called emergency number and found out that the Iceland Rental guy Victor had to take someone to the airport and would be there in 10-15 minutes. We drive back down and wait. Twenty minutes later I make my husband drive me back to those girls. They call me a taxi. It is now 3:20 and counting. They call emergency number and get Victor again who says only 5 minutes away. Taxi comes at 3:35 and takes me down to my husband. No Victor until 3:40. He looks at us and asks for keys and I only hope my deposit was credited back on my card. No papers were signed. I told him he was giving me a "heart attack" but no apology. Perhaps someone called in sick for the holiday but if you are to return a car you expect the office to be open or at least a sign or something. Either way we were the last 2 people to get on board. It took hours to get that adrenaline feeling to calm down and I am just glad to be done with Iceland Rental Cars. I understand the Icelandic people being "chill" but there are standards of normal customer service and they failed those. So rating is 1
