Lava Car Rental in Iceland

The car drop off process needs to be improved. We waited for over 30 minutes to drop off the car and get a ride to the airport. We started panicking at one point when the shuttle driver said he “would be right back” a second time and we were asking people who were picking up their cars if they would take us to the airport. We planned to be 2 hours early for our flight and by the time we arrived at the airport we had just over an hour. If there were any lines we may have missed our flight.

My experience with Lava Car Rental via Northbound was good. We have rented Toyota RAV4; we were planning to use some of the F-Roads. The condition of the car was very good. It was in a pretty good condition. You could see that it's well maintained. We chose Northbound to rent the car because of good reviews & mentions in traveler blogs/vlogs. Only downside is (that could be also misunderstanding of us) in the website it states that you have 'guaranteed model' but we have to specify our request again at the Lava Car rental office; at first they were planning to give us different model.

We had an excellent experience renting our car from Lava Car rental via Northbound. Staff (particularly Harpa) were available and supportive even before our arrival and we had a seemless pick up and drop off at the airport. Renting this vehicle slowed us to truly explore the county of Iceland and we were pleased with the value and professionalism offered by this company.

- At the counter of Lava Car Rental, we were told the the 2019 Dacia Duster Manual which we rented would not be available and were offered a Mitsubishi Eclipse (hybrid) and were told this would be an upgrade. However, when I said we would go, among others, to Landmanalaugar, including river-crossings, and if Dacia Duster wouldn't be better, this was confirmed and we were offered kind of a spare car modell 2019 Dacia Duster (with the comment that an alarm light would blink which would not be a mechanical but only elctronic problem). We took the car but it turned out to be quite worn out: it already had 194.000 km, a crooked steering wheel, smaller damages all over the car, several alarm signals came up during our road trip indicating several different issues.. for the very high price of the car rental (1000 EUR per week) I expected a much better condition of the car. I think we were only lucky that the car made it during our 3-week-trip without breaking down. - It took us one hour on the counter of Lava Car Rental to get the car due to a very slow employee (jamaican guy) who was not knowledgeable at all. Overall, only 1 out of 3 employees at that day was competent and was able to reply to our questions. - The woman who picked us up at the airport could have been friendlier.

We had no problems at all! Car was clean. Perfect car for driving through Iceland.

Uncomplicated and very friendly car rental. The car (4x4 2021 Nissan X-Trail Automatic) had already a few thousand kilometers on the speedometer, but it ran well and reliably. Even in the highlands and on unpaved roads it did not let us down. We had a lot of fun with the car, a wonderful trip and both handover and drop-off on the day of departure were quick and uncomplicated

Our experiencia with Lava Car was good, the car was what we expected and they explain us everything perfect.

I’m sure our experience was an isolated one, but our rental car experience with Lava was terribly stressful. The customer service agent did not explain anything to us in advance and was lacking people skills. We were given a vehicle with a lot of preexisting damage, that had a broken sliding door handle and would intermittently appear to be overheating (smoke was coming from the hood at certain points on our road trip). The dashboard never indicated any problems, but as foreigners in a new country for the first time with no cell service or WiFi access it was incredibly disconcerting to have to worry whether or not you would need to spend your vacation dealing with vehicle issues. There were other minor issues, for example electric cooler would unexpectedly stop working and the vehicle was missing kitchen items that were promised in the rental contract. The USB charging port in the cab did not work, and the length of the bed was shorter than advertised which was problematic for my husband who is 6’ 7” tall (this was something we gave detailed attention to throughout the booking process). The van also did not have cruise control, which was a feature that was promised in the rental description. The tires looked like spare tires (from an American’s perspective) and the rims were not the same as they had been pictured in the listing. We spent an absurd amount of our vacation time stressing out about the reliability of this vehicle instead of enjoying our first trip to Iceland, which was incredibly disappointing. Again, I share this not to complain or place blame on any company in particular, as I’m sure our experience was not the average one. I simply share to provide constructive feedback that might help Lava improve their company moving forward.

The car was great to drive; efficient and easy to handle. We have had a lovely time with our cute car.

The only complain I have is that when I pickup the car I was given the key of the car with no initial information about my insurance and some important things of the car as how to open the gas gate. I had to ask for those thinks to receive the information. I think the person who give the keys should devote some more time to make clear the scope of the insurance one has, and the most important things of the car one is renting. Usually the rented car is not he same one has on his own.

I’d like the Suzuki very much. The booking was very uncomplicated, as was the car handover. We had a free upgrade and the car was in good condition. The return was also without problems. The service was friendly and competent.

The Car was in a very good condition. Had some problems with the pickup since it was not clear where to find the shuttle. The airport has more than one exit. After a phone call everything went fast and smooth. Drop of was easy. Car was a Plug in Hybrid. Wished we had gotten a cable to use electric power.

Everything worked perfectly. Definitely booking our next Iceland car there again.

I got a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross as a "similar" car and it was very good. The car was quite new, and everything in the company service was smooth and clear.

I picked up my car from you. when we drove off the message went on that the left rear tire was empty. i went back and mentioned this to the man behind the counter. he left with the car and a little later he came back and the message was gone. so he pumped it up. but every two days we had to inflate it ourselves. so this tire was flat. I didn't enjoy driving that. and that bothered me too. I think he should have offered another car instead of pumping up the tire and sending us away again.

The car was great, except we did not get proper instructions. It was a hybrid with an empty battery, we did not use it during our stay because we didn't know how to do so. Another thing was that we didn't get the service we would like to have when we broke down. The plate under the engine came loose, therefore we wanted to find a garage but we couldn't find one. We hoped lava car rental would call a garage nearby for us, zo we could get it fixed.. instead we drove to times to the same city on different days but couldn't find one that could help us eventually we had to reschedule our plans to find one 2 hours away... Not nice when you are in a holiday.
