Verified reviews from our customers that rented a car from Nordic Car Rental Campers

I should say first that all the people we encountered at Nordic Car Rental were very nice and patient. However, it took way too long (several hours) from landing at the airport to finally driving off with our camper van. They appeared to be overwhelmed with the number of people arriving to get rentals, causing long waits to get picked up at the airport (my family and I had to separate and go in two separate trips), and waiting again at the rental counter. Waiting aside, the real problem was with the van itself. Even though we were 'upgraded' to a somewhat newer model, the van had a lot of problems. 1) The main door could not be closed completely. As a result, we had to put up with incessant beeping warnings telling us the door was open. When it would rain hard, water would also leak in through the cracks around the door, and also through a hole in the roof, getting parts of our sleeping area wet. 2) The passenger door also developed problems to the point where we stopped using it for fear it would break off, and instead, had everyone load in from the driver side. 3) The tires were all low on pressure, but one tire was dangerously low. After putting air in the tires we were thankful that the pressure seemed to hold. This is an obvious thing that should be checked before renting out any car! 4) One of the wiper blades appeared to be bent and was only making contact with half of its length. Luckily, I was able to reinstall it, and managed to get it to stay in place for the remainder of our trip. Again, something that obviously should have been checked before renting out a car in Iceland! Its true I probably should have called and tried to get a replacement, but as we were already several hours away before the problems started presenting themselves, we were reluctant to turn back. Driving such a vehicle in Iceland made me nervous (what if the door flung open with my kids in the back!), and added to the stress of the trip. I feel fortunate the engine, battery, and brakes didn't have any such problems. While we saved money by picking an older model vehicle, I did not expect basic functionality and safety to be compromised.

we are moderately pleased with nordic camping. firstly the staff do not smile. then, during the first breakfast we realized that the stove was not working. then the second day the vehicle broke down we had to wait 22h at the same place before we come to replace the car. the second vehicle had not been checked before we were entrusted (difficult to open the doors and ventilation problem). what disappointed us the most is the fact of not having an apology or a commercial gesture.

Some feedback about our experience: - the car was in quite bad shape outside, lots of damages and scratches all over - the car was not clean inside - the rear door lock was missing some bolts, so it was a bit difficult to lock -the drivers door handle was not working correctly (some spring broken/missing inside?) -side door was damaged, so needs a lot of force to close it -in contract fuel was marked 75%, but when we started the meter was showing 40%. We went back and they corrected it. - the plates were quite ”wear out” - in airport we waited some 30-40 min and not anybody with any ”Pick-up sign”. We need to call them and wait some time. BUT our overall experience of Iceland was VERY good and also car was working despite of all the above negative notes!

In general ok but I must point out the below: - the interior of the camper is not in a very good condition, to name a few: 1. The seat cushions are quite dirty; 2. The ladder to the upper bed did not fit with the holding slots, making the ladder useless; 3. The sleeping kits were handed over to me in a way I don’t feel they are clean (just grabbed by your staff from the garage, without proper packing). Concerned camper is PDU57, please check. - when doing the booking I thought I have chosen the insurance package with the highest protection (I.e. driver does not bear any liability in case of damage, which is common with other rental company), however when I picked up the camper I was told that I still need to be responsible for the damage up to ISK25000, could this be changed in the future? - during the driving the rear car plate was ripped off and at the end I was charged EUR70, with the reason “the car plate was dropped when I was renting / driving”. To be honest I don’t understand this as nobody would be able to keep monitoring whether the car plate is always attached to the car, and apparently the reason of dropping car plate is the problem of the installation by the car owner, not the driver (unless it can be proven that the driver purposely remove the car plate, which normally I don’t think any driver will do so).

Not happy with the motorhome. Many defects and broken pieces. One cabinet didn't close. It even has worn out tyres!! I would not choose this company again.

We were very disappointed with our Renault. The van is in need of many repairs. On the first morning we spent an hour trying to get the sliding door to close, the locking mechanism was closed when the door was open and would allow the door to close. We finally managed to get the door closed and then we’re afraid to use it for the rest of the trip. This meant we had to access the sleeping area from the drivers door. The drivers seat did not have a functioning headrest. The light for the instrument panel did not work, which didn’t matter much with 24 hrs of daylight unless you were going through a tunnel and then it is a major problem. The drivers door would sometimes open when the vehicle was in motion, this happened 4 or 5 times during the rental. Third gear did not engage very well, it made a grinding sound every time, compared to the other 5 gears which were smooth. Other than the mechanical issues with the van, we had an amazing time! Iceland truly is a special place. We will always remember our time in Iceland.

Since nothing special happened at the end the experience was slightly positive. The best was the competence and clarity of explanation from your mechanic. But then I have to say the camper was not definitely in the best condition being quite old and having a lot of flaws and damages internally. The worst was the very high deposit I had to immobilize in my credit card that, summed with the rental cost, immediately saturated the plafond ("normal" credit card has a plafond of 5000€) and I was forced to buy additional insurance to halve the deposit itself. Luckily I had an additional credit card that allowed me and my family to survive in an expensive country like Iceland!

Hi there! well, how I understand this type of vehicles are used by a lot of people, so it's normal to find some problems with them. On my own experience the problem was vehicle age... even the engine, but again I understand how the people use this vehicles. Maybe the only think that I didn't like was the price for that type of vehicle.

Did the job and got us around the island safely. We had ordered specifically a vehicle that was listed as diesel as we knew the prices for diesel was cheaper in Iceland and we get better fuel mileage driving with one as we have diesels at home. But when we went to pick it up it wasn't a diesel and the guy made it sound like oh the prices were all about the same... NO!!! That was not the case everywhere diesel was at least 10 cents cheaper, we spent so much on fuel and constantly filling up ..the fuel mileage was crap. Pretty disappointed we paid for a vehicle thinking it was going to be exactly as specified on the paper work when we got it and it was not. So spent more money in the end.. probably wouldn't go back with Nordic

We chose Nordic Campers purely because they were the cheapest we could find, and I suppose you get what you pay for. It was not a bad camper van, it did the job, just don't expect anything fancy. It was an older and a bit beat-up Renault Trafic van. The equipment it came with was rather Spartan and a few more curtains and blinds would have been nice. Having said that, we didn't have any mechanical problems with it and it got us everywhere we wanted to get to, and in fact we had a brilliant holiday! I would recommend Nordic Campers for people wanting to do Iceland on a budget.

Not bad but i could have been better: there were some items that need to be repaired : window's blinds were broken, main door didn't lock properly and battery didn't charge full (only 50%)

The booking process was correct, price and conditions were corrects too. Once there we had to pay 100 euros for propane gas, we thought was included. The Motorhome was clean but the battery was totally empty, after a chat with owner he gave us as a solution stay over and charge it with his own electricity, but obviously we didn’t expect stay a whole night at book office. A part of this, the RV was correct, some imperfections as fuel indicator broken, so was hard to control the fuel levels. This kind of things must to fix it before rent but the most important things , the RV must to be full and ready to go, no matter what. In spite of everything, it was a great experience. Thank you.

The office was very hectic and they were very unorganized. When we arrived there was only one man at the entire place, but there were a lot of people dropping off and picking up. When we receive our camper everything looks great! The guy shows us how to use the back heater and off we go! Our 4th night on ring road we experience a storm. It was very cold, windy and raining very hard. Our van started leaking and our heater did not work. It was a miserable night. Our sleeping bags and pillows were soaked and it was very cold. When we mentioned this when returning our van the guy behind the didn't seem to care very much. He just brushed us off and continued to help the next customer.

Airport shuttle was late, we waited 45 minutes. (Nordic Campers) Contact provided in the booking cannot be reached. We dialled like 3 times and no one picked up. When we asked them about the phone number (to check whether it is working or not), they explained to us that sometimes there's a queue, and they have yet to set up an auto reply bot advising caller on the queue. Pick up process was ok. We were upgraded to the larger Renault Traffic, which we very much appreciate, although it consumed more fuel. The staff didn't care to explain how to use the car, he didn't even bother to walk out with us to inspect the car. We asked about heater (is there one, how to use it), and they can't even answer us properly. We had to figure everything ourselves. Even had our first night sleep without the heater, cause we only figured that out the next day. Pillows were provided but not blanket, we had to pay another 25 EUR extra for sleeping bed rental. Burner was provided but no gas can. Otherwise, everything else was ok. No major issues with the camper van. We wanted to ask for a few hours extension just before our flight the next day morning at 0700 hrs. We tried calling the contact number, and again no one answered. We called the mother company City Car Rental (Reykjavik office), and immediately someone answered us. They were kind enough of grant us 5 hours extension for no charge.

Really the experience was not very good. We arrived late to the Reykjavik airport, around 1:30 AM and Nordic Campers transfer arrived more or less in time. Around 2 AM we were ready to leave and when we tried to start the motorhome (Ford), the engine was broken, that means that they didn't review the vehicle to ensure it was working correctly. They provided us with another motorhome (Fiat). We moved all the luggage to the new van, and then we notice that the second bed in the dining area was very small (around 1.50 meters or less). Nordic Camper responsible tried to convince us that it was fine and that we could use it as a bed without problems. I had to literally lay down in the bed to show that it was impossible to use. They didn't have more motorhomes available and the solution that they give us is that we should drive with the new van to the nearest camping (at 3 AM), sleep in the camping and then return at 8 AM when they open the office to get a new van. This solution was a nonsense, pay a camping, and sleep only a few hours in a van with children beds, so we suggest to sleep directly in their parking in the original Ford motorhome. At 8:00 AM we talked again with the person at the Nordic Camper desk (this person was much more competent than the one in charge the previous night), the mechanics checked that the engine was broken and they gave us another van with 4 full-size beds and a working engine. We were aware when we rented the motorhome that it will not be the latest model, but we also found a couple of problems during the travel. The first one was the handbrake, it was not working correctly and it was needed to leave a gear on to park. Also, the locking of the fridge was not working and we had to lock the door with the luggage. In summary, maybe we had bad luck, but it seems that Nordic Campers doesn't have enough personnel and procedures to ensure that they provide a good quality level to their customers.

Airport pickup was late - we were unable to make contact with the company during this time Staff - staff member going over rental paperwork was not friendly and said it was our fault the airport pickup was delayed Emergency - we had an issue on the weekend in which we needed to contact the department nd the emergency hotline was not answered at all, we called 7 times over a two hour span. The regular line to the department took 3 times for an answer, we were lucky we were not in an emergency as this would have been an even more serious issue The van - the actual van was wonderful with all the amenities we needed! The price was also ideal in comparison

Everyone at Nordic Campers was great. The camper itself was fine, but not anything like we were led to believe on the page when we booked it (or maybe we didn't read everything correctly). We had looked at other companies offering similiar cars and Nordic Campers was a bit cheaper so we went with them. However, looking at the many other campers we saw in Iceland, the Nordic Campers are by far the most bare-boned, so to speak. We had to beg for chairs, no camping table, had to pay extra for a food box, no storage near the beds (in the form of hanging bags or the like), no curtains, , we had just a uncovered mattress filling for a bed, and the list goes on and on. We had a good time and learned to love the camper but it was a rocky start and because of the lack of equipment we would perhaps not recommend Nordic Camper (although everyone at Nordic Camper was great and the service (pick-up and communication and the like) was great.
