Good service but first car had a broken windscreen, which we refuse to take. Friendly service and rather bad communication. They didn't tell us in advance that the office wasn't open when we should return the car. They should have informed us, we shouldn't have to ask.
A few days before our rental we informed if an upgrade to a 4WD would be possible but unfortunately we didn't receive reaction before our rental pick up time. When we showed up at the address were we would pick up our car it turned out the office had moved to the domestic airport (due to corona) and after a few calls we got a ride there. Geysir said this was Northbounds fault but Northbound said this was Geysirs fault. The Dacia Duster now wasn't available so that was a bummer. I must say things didn't start great, but we received a compensation from Northbound which we appreciated. I think we just had bad luck, but it wasn't quite what we'd expected.
The service was very good, including picking up and returning the car. The car we got was not in the best shape, but worked fine. However the door broke, so we got a new one with really good service, but this car could also use a small helping hand, so it was in a better shape, fx the lamp inside was hanging, the breaks-lamp was lightening in the display, the heat in the car only worked sometimes and the doors was not in the best shape either. But all in all the car was very fine and worked as it should, and lava provided good service, so we are satisfied. The transporter in general was a very good choice for driving in Iceland, and sleeping in.
The car was clean inside, and ran well, no difficulties with the rental process; booking, recieving and returning the car.
However I had some general concerns about the service:
- the website was unclear regarding the deposit required. The first time I saw mention of a deposit was after we had booked the car and it was part of the information attached to the confirmation email.
- similarly it was unclear whether I had to pay a deposit when taking out insurance. I had to email the company to explain this.
- the driver that picked us up from the airport (he explained he was new) didn't know all the companies he was collecting customers for.. we had to wait over an hour at the airport for him to return (a second time) when I had to point out to him that "Northbound" was on his sign.
-the free GPS was impossible to use. Having been notified that we would have a GPS I opted against renting the in-car WiFi...
It was good, on the whole. We had to start our trip early at short notice and Nothern Lights were flexible in being willing and able to provide a care a few days early. The first car we drove off in had a bad rattle so we went straight back, the guy agreed and swapped it. Nonetheless, the second car had a (lesser) rattle which we put up with for the trip, but the car functioned well.
At pick up, we had to prompt them to give us the sat nav (we had been offerred the choice of free sat nav or free additional driver). Unfortunately after the first day the sat nav stopped working correctly - the touch screen stopped working. Lucky we had our phones.
At drop off, they had barely sufficient capacity to transfer to the airport. We had to (just) squeeze in to the minibus with two other families - not great in COVID times. The guy at Norther Lights at drop off was grumpy to the point of being quite unpleasantly rude...
Everything OK, reliable Car but quite used with 200k+ km. Unfortunately consumes a lot of fuel.

Best prices I found online. Good transfer to/from airport. The car was not on perfect conditions (one light broken) neither the camping material (seats broken and useless table). They could also improve customer service.
Das Auto war unseren Anforderungen entsprechend. Enttäuscht waren wir allerdings von dem Dachzelt, da es nach 5 Regentagen nicht mehr bewohnbar war. Die Abdichtung am Heck des Zeltes war undicht und die Matratze konnte man auswringen.
The shuttle service from the airport like as the pick up service was quick and good. The car was not as we expected, more than 200.000 km of life, with scratches and damage in both side of the car. After some days light on the Tires pressure alarm despite the tires was ever in good conditions
-we send you an email because our flight had changed and it took a long time befor the mail was answered.
-The motorhome was fine. What we didn't like was the duvet. It would be much more convenient if we got a 2 persons duvet instead of 2 one person duvets
good experience with this funny but efficient car
The car was similar but not a Hyundai Tucson but it worked. It was a Honda CR-V with 168.000 km
A lot of damages were already existing, when we took over the car. The checkout was without problems. Take a photo or video before start.
The car was okay and everything what we needed. The Suzuki Jimny has not a lot of power but needs a lot of gas. The roof tent was big enough and good as long as the weather was not super bad. It leaks a little bit if there is a lot of rain. But everything together was as expected and we could everything do what we wanted to do with it.
It did the job, but it wasn't 100% reliable – once the engine took a few minutes to start on the 1st day, and it was a tad scary, but there were no issues afterwards.
Overall a very good experience and great price. Getting the vehicle with the voucher was no issue and we could start our trip right away.
The only issue we had was a flat tire which was not the actual problem. Unfortunately our car did not come with a car jack so we luckily could borrow one from other tourists. The support from Lotus Car Rental however was very helpful and they even gave us a small refund for the missing jack.
The car itself was sufficient for all roads including F-roads (we did not cross any rivers). The insurance package (Platinum) was a good choice considering the flat tire as well as it came with free Wifi.

With this car you got what you paid for, a smaller but functional sleeping option. Also, the gas worked without problems and so we had no problem making cheap food as well. Theres only two things is: 1. The car is not isolated, and so it gets moist and cold during nighttime 2., Sleeping bags are not included and cost 25€ each.
Overall a perfect van for us, as we only used it for sleeping and transportation:)
A good experience on quite all points. Friendly staff, no problems with the car, good price and quick check in/out.
Just, credit cards are not common in France (only debit cards) and the money debited for bail generated unexpected fees (change rate)
The car was older and had more wear and tear than expected but did the job well and we cannot complain.
It would help to have been more clear about the tunnel toll in Akureyri which we got fined for 3 times as we did not know where the toll was supposed to be paid and we assumed it was an automatic system linked to the car licence / some magnetic strip that we would pay for at the end.
The Box between the front seats only make noise, and it's not good for anything.
The back windows wiper blade doesn't work, it only makes two stripes on the window, the window washer for the back window also doesn't work.
Otherwise the car drove us about 3.600 kms without any surprises and so everything is ok.
The car was great. We had no issues with the car.
The only problem was, that there was nothing to hang clothes on.
It was not the Ford, it was Dacia Dokker. So it was a little different than what we expected.
Some features of the car are not very appropriate for this kind of use, like: you can not open the back door from inside; you have to change the seats before sleeping...
The employees were friendly and the price of the rental was good, but the rented car had a lot of mechanical and electronic problems (not very comforting during our stay).
the experience with Lava camper was good with very competitive prices compared to other rentals. the only points that can be improved are: 1) would need darkened side windows or curtains as they are not present. 2) to go off road it is better to put big wheels that soften the impact with the ground. quality and competitive prices with other rentals.
The car was technically ok, but could have been cleaner, especially the inside of the windshield. The dimensions of the rooftop tent could be pointed out more clearly. I'm 190cm and could not stretch fully.
The Suzuki was quite good. Just that the radar brake was most times automatically disabled when it rains and the navigation system was out of date.
The communication and the customer support was quite good.
A few topics to improve:
- Transport capacity between airport and northern lights...we had to wait more then one hour
- At the end we had to park the car directly at the airport. A short notice via mail would have saved us the way to northern lights
- Maybe we missed it but a notice about the deposit would have been good to know
Decent car, some minor problems like AC not working, wheels not balanced, whining fan-belt, and backdoor a bit lose.
And also the Tires were not of the newest kind, since you also are responsible if a tire breaks.
But we had a really good trip with the 4x4 and the vehicle did not let us down :)

Pick up at the airport was a little bit slow. Not enough drivers/cars to transfer all people from the airport to the rental company. We received a great car (not the one that was reserved) but gps was no good. After a couple of days the dashboard of the car mentioned that a check up was necessary. Called the company and they told us not to worry. Drop off was not that smooth. Only two people present who were driving people from their office to the airport while no one was in the office taking care of people who wanted to bring back their cars.
