The Supplier Response:
Hello, we are sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience, the same could be said from our side as we have never had so rude customers that even police involvement would be needed. We regret that waiting 20minutes at the airport caused you so much frustration disregarding the fact that you were picked up (free of charge) at 1:30a.m. though it is our off-working hours. All claims regarding some electrical equipment malfunctions were proven wrong when the vehicle was returned, and we simply plugged the cable in. The returned campervan was very dirty and had damage made to it and the customer was charged 850Eur, though the invoice sent later amounts to 1505Eur and the remaining balance hasn't been covered yet.

Am so sorry to write down about what I expected to get and once I arrived to Rent.is I got a completely different campervan where nothing worked correctly accept engine and breaks. I had feeling of renting a campervan from car demolition and quickly fixed to rent it out. BTW I didn't get what I booked and the customer service person didn't even like doing his job to explain how things works. I had a primum insurance and it might be handy to fix a lot of stuff in that car to improve its conditions.

Firstly, the car stopped working just after less than 12h since I have rent it. The situation was made worse by the fact that the worker who answered my call was very rude and did not allow me to explain properly what was happening with the car. He kept insisting that it was a battery problem and ended up hanging up the phone before I could explain that it was not a battery issue. The replacement car was smaller than the car that I have rent, so I asked to change the car and arranged to pick up the new car at 9 am the next day at the location where we were in the country, but the car arrived 3 hours later. I am extremely disappointed with the service that I received from the company. The customer service that I received was lacking. The staff was unhelpful and unfriendly, and it seemed as though they were not interested in addressing my concerns. I had hoped for an stress-free and enjoyable vacation, but instead, I was met with frustration and I had waste lot of time during my holidays trying to solve this issue.

the worst rental experience of my life with wild campers. The vehicle was almost out of service: completely damaged, no additional thermal isolation, the gaz heater did'not work, the tires were dead, we had to come back during the stay to have them changed. This led to perturbate our stay a lot, but we received no refund so far. Also the emplyee at the reception was arrogant and impolite.. Only one employee when we had troubles was correct.. So in summary they provide bad value for money, but more important the vehicle was really dangerous to drive... So our advice: NEVER rent there if you want a nice and safe trip in Iceland. Talking to the other campers, there are rental companies like happy campers or ku ku campers which look much more serious and reliable.

Unfortunately, the vehicle was in terrible condition (heating system did not work properly, interiors falling apart etc.). The (negative) highlight came at the end, when a door handle with apparently preexisting was claimed to be a new damage after finally coming off on the first day - never again!

We waited at the airport about two hours for pickup because voucher doesn’t show which rental company we have, anyone doesn’t pickup phone (rental noted in voucher and also northbound). Then we got car with broken doors on the passenger side, it doesn’t open properly sometimes doesn’t open at all. Even if was close, car was beeping and signals on the dash showed open door. If we opened window, it doesn’t close. In the end free gps was useless.

It was ok but we were left waiting at the airport for over an hour when we arrived with a baby. We had to call to get them to come and collect us, despite them having our flight details. I wouldn’t use them again.

Very disappointed with the car. Very battered up. Engine light came on halfway through the trip. Doors were not sealed and air was penetrating everywhere. The worst is that they inspect the car on delivery as if there was nothing wrong with it. They intentionally look for something to charge you.

Well, it was my choice to go for a 2017 model, but I was not expecting a car with more than 200.000 km of life; the driver seat was slightly moving when hitting bombs and the front wheels were not at all what you were expecting when you have to face Iceland winter, as too much used and with a small number of spikes (back wheels were much better). One wheel was visibly low pressure when we rented the car and we had to ask to be fixed, and they forgot to mention we had discounts on the fuel provider (one lady at a counter of N1 mentioned it to us).

I was disappointed by the experience with Fara. When picking up, Northbound had indicated that the supplier would wait outside of the airport, but Fara required a call for them to pick up at the airport. Once the agent for Fara picked us up and drove us to the location in Keflavik, he proceeded to take about 45 minutes to prepare our paperwork, which included a call to someone else when their computer system wasn't working as expected. He also pressured us to get add-on insurance at about $50 US per day, saying that Iceland winds and weather could be unpredictable (even though the sign on their desk said that wind damage would not be covered with this type of insurance). I declined as I did not feel that this would normally be worth it. He showed us a collection of pictures of the vehicle in its current state and also suggested to take pictures of the vehicle when the light was better (we arrived at 8am, but sun didn't rise until about 10:30am). When we returned the car, the agent who checked us out found a dent on the interior rear door, in an area where the first agent did not take a picture. The drop off agent said that not all agents were as thorough as him when inspecting. When I said that I wasn't sure how that dent would have gotten there, he said that since there was no photo of the interior of the door before, that we would have to pay 60,000 ISK for it to be repaired. I understand that I am technically liable for this damage, and that I should have done a more thorough inspection of the vehicle before driving it off, but I imagine if I had waited a few hours for the sun to rise to take pictures, there would still have been an opportunity for plausible deniability for Fara that I had caused that damage in the intervening time. Anyways, the car itself worked well, and it held up in the Icelandic winter. I appreciated the integrated GPS system and studded winter tires, which both worked well.

The Supplier Response:
Dear Michael,

Thank you for your feedback. However, there are a few things that need to be mentioned.

On the voucher from Northbound, there is information:
‘’ PICK UP: AFTER obtaining your luggage, please call the
FARA SHUTTLE SERVICE on +354 537 2018. The
SHUTTLE DRIVER will normally arrive within 10-20 minutes
to collect you from the KEF AIRPORT ARRIVALS HALL.’’
We are very sorry. If somehow we mislead you.

Our customer service standards are top quality. We are doing our best to proceed through all the paperwork as fast as possible so our customers can start an incredible journey in Iceland asap.
Unfortunately, sometimes computer systems decide to don’t cooperate. I’m sure we did everything we could to finish the paperwork as fast as possible, even though we are very sorry for the inconvenience. Fortunately, a situation like this is extremely rare.

Iceland is a very unpredictable country, and in some conditions, it is easy to damage the car (even if you are not aware of it). That’s why we recommend our customers complete their protection package to be protected against most of the damages.

Best Regards
Fara Team

Dear northbound Team, thanks for the opportunity to comment. The land and the people were fantastic. I really did enjoy my time in Iceland, even though the weather wasn't always kind during the trip. Unfortunately I have to raise a few points regarding my rental. From a riding perspective the car was doing more or less a fine job, even though the rainsensor for the wipers was broken, so the wipers only knew stop or full throttle. In a little bit of rain this was very infuriating, as you had to manually adjust all the time. Additionally the breaking pads in the front were faulty and were gone after a few hundred kilometers which made the onwards journey not only a bit nervewrecking, but looking back also a bit dangerous. This was also a big part, why I ended my trip two days early and gave the car back on the 18th of November and not as booked on the 20th. Overall the condition of the car was not completely as I imagined. In the windshield there was a gravel damage which if it was not properly handled beforehand, could have easily damage the windshield further. Additionally the car had on both front doors damages from overextending the doors from wind, as well as different other damages on the chassis. Considering the overall condition of the car, looking back I would not choose the same insurance package again... Also: The lighting in the back was not working. Not the two small booklamps and not the light on the ceiling, which was supposed to be the main light in the back. The only light working was the one for the back door which was linked with the car main battery, which always runs the danger of depleting the main battery. Also the interiour was very dirty and moldy. This did have an impact on breathing. And I never fully felt comfortable. The camping gear provided with the rental was in parts faulty or broken. Case for the gas stove was broken, one chair provided etc. I am not an overly picky person, but all in all I expected something a bit different. As I was already a few kilometers into my journey when I noticed all these things, I decided to keep going, but with faulty breaks during the challenging weather on a roundtrip of whole Iceland I did no longer feel safe. Therefore the earlier return. I raised these concerns very early to Lava Car Rental, but never got a reply or a comment. When I returned the car and raised my points again in person the clerk in charge assured me, that he would have his boss look over my concerns. Until now, I did not get any amendmend from their side. Also the interiour of the car was very spartanic and not at all as I imagined it. As it was functional this was no great concern, but there was a only a cheap fitout of the car with wooden boards with no insulation whatsoever, which made it necessary to run the heating system the whole time and to position oneself away from the outside walls, which were blank metal. Summary: - The car was functional, but faulty in parts; maybe even dangerous with faulty breaks and also with the mold an health hazard Best regards Bastian

The car did as it should have - it got us from point A to point b. However, the seats are not adjustable and were very uncomfortable for us because we are tall. There is zero insulation, not even a headliner, in the back of the van to provide any type of insulation. I found the best price I could bc we were in Iceland for 25 days, but to be labeled as "cheap vans" on the outside is not necessary. I understand the advertising, but it wasn't appreciated. Upon pickup, the van was not entirely clean. There was lots of food crumbs and tiny bit of debris that didn't get vacuumed. The customer service is Terrible. Upon arriving for pick up and returning of the van, I was never greeted by anyone. In fact I was the first to get there but the last to be helped.. I had to wait over hour before ever being helped. The cheap van annex building was where we were told to wait. There was no one there, no sign saying when anyone would show up, ended up going to "happy" building where the other guests were being helped. Only one person working at counter, but several sitting at desks who offered no hello or help to us. The van had a headlight out, a reverse light out and the check engine light was on up on picking it up. We waited for the mechanic to fix the lights, yet another delay after waiting over an hour to be helped. No keys were with the van, the bedding was not in there, the employee had to go look for these things. the employee did not give us the Wi-Fi which we paid for and also the gps. I had to go back to the office to pick these items up. There was no ice scraper with the van,it is winter season in Iceland, why is this important item not included?? I had to use my credit card as a scraper. The windshield wipers were shit, doing more smearing than clearing. At drop-off time, we arrived at 1230, only to wait until 1 for someone to show up and help. (Top of the hour is when shuttle departs to go to airport) we had intentions of taking the 1pm. The girl told us we had to wait until 2 for the shuttle and then went back to the "happy" building. This was unacceptable as we were there at 1230. I explained this to her, she took us to airport at 1. The price was right for the car bc of the length of our trip but I will not rent from this company again because of the terrible customer service. I was never even asked upon returning the car how my trip was. Sad.

Disappointed from the overall experience. We had to wait almost an hour in the airport to get picked up (we were seeing constantly people from other car companies picking other travellers way faster than ours).at the end they took only me(the driver),then i had to drive back to pick my friends, they were almost alone at the airport at that point! Worst part was when in the night of 31th October our battery died. We were calling more than 45minutes at the service telephone and we couldn't find anyone,we were always getting connected with the primary office, the guy there was trying to find the service guys, even in the private telephones and still couldn't find someone.after that we managed to tell our problem (we couldn't get in the car, electrical key wasn't working, probably dead battery).at last a guy showed up at least 2 hours after we first started calling only to bring a manual key, then he had to drive back to bring the cables,he came after one extra hour.considering that for the first 45 minutes we couldn't even share our problem made the experience unpleasant.on top of it we had to pay for him coming although we paid the top premium level of insurance. Our trip in Iceland was amazing,we are totally visiting again but we will most certainly book a car with another company

Hi , we had a great time in Iceland, but the Suzuki is out dated now, it was not a nice car to drive , a lot of thing in the car don’t work right, the high beam switch not working right, the door lock not working right, the hand brake was a joke ,the car was also pulling to the right what you was driving it , the car as got a lot of faults but the main one is for the head lights are so dull when driving in the dark , which made it hard to see the road

Lava Car Rental - the folks that work there were very pleasant. The first vehicle we were given was not good (a Dacia Duster). It had some issues, one of which that stood out was it pulled to the left when you used the brakes. It died on us the very first morning. 17kms into our trip we parked it correctly at the Blue Lagoon, when we came out the vehicle would not start, nor would it jump from the security van assisting us. We spoke to the rental center during this time, but it was one gentleman working and another on lunch. Thankfully we were able to pop start it and get it back to the rental center. There we exchanged it for another vehicle (they gave us another Duster). This car seemed better at first, but we quickly realized it had its own issues. The shocks on the vehicle must have been very old, as they car bounced like a 70’s Cadillac. The wipers were worn out and on the second day coming back from the North we had to detour to Reykjavik for new wipers. They did kindly reimburse me for those when I turned in the car. The vehicle itself had an electrical fault somewhere and had a warning light that came on 3 days into our trip. It also had a bad TPMS sensor, so after we figured out that a tire was not actually going low, it was just the sensor, we ignored it. Otherwise the car worked. Maybe had we received a different car I would give them a better rating, but the vehicle had over 200,000kms on it and seemed like it needed some basic maintenance. I wouldn’t say avoid them as I believe they are a good company, but beware of the vehicle you receive.

The rental camper we requested was not available. The company Nordic Rental planned to give us a six person camper, which was quite a bit bigger than what we had asked for. They also told us that, because of high winds, we would be waiving the insurance we paid for if we decided to take the camper van and recommended against us renting it. It would have been very helpful to know the risks associated with winds this time of year before getting to the rental company. Additionally, we had ordered a wifi hotspot that they were out of. The motorhome was generally not in great shape (check oil light turned on when we drove away), and upholstery had rips, etc. We ended up returning the motorhome and asking to switch for a rental car due to the condition of the motorhome, it being larger than what we had reserved, and the high winds. It was a difficult start to our trip. I would not rent again from this agency.

Unfortunately, I did not have such a good experience renting the car in Iceland. The rental ended up being through Lava Car Rentals, Northbound seems to be the mediator. It started with the fact that at the agreed time after landing no one was at the airport to pick us up. Only after a call someone came. Space was then in the bus for 8 people, but there were 12 people at the airport and had to be taken. So 4 people had to wait (according to the driver a maximum of 10 minutes). When after an hour still no one had come back, we had to call again (twice, because first no one answered the phone) and 10 minutes later we were then also picked up with the other two people. We had booked a Dacia Duster 2017 with free GPS. According to the website of Lava Car Rental, they have "new cars" and "reliable technology". We got a battered Dacia Duster that made very high-frequency sounds, whose airbag lamp was lit, so obviously the airbag was not working (more on this below; these two things we have unfortunately only applied after some time driving) and had no GPS (we felt that was not so bad, because our cell phone could take over this function well). When we arrived at our accommodation in the evening and our ears were ringing from the beeping, I wrote Lava Car Rentals about the two defects. I also quickly got an answer early the next morning about where I would be and thought that a replacement vehicle would probably be taken care of then. So I wrote down our plan for the day in detail and noted that we would be that evening again in the current accommodation, but then had to go on (we had already pre-booked accommodation). Then came nothing more, only the next day in the early afternoon (when we were already in the middle of the way to the next accommodation), came the mail with a workshop that we could drive to, which looks at the car. My answer was a bit brusque, whether that was their seriousness, we had already gone further, as I had noted. But the brusqueness can be excused: On the key it was noted that the car must be refueled with petrol, but on a scratched sign on the tank one could see "Diesel" - however, I noticed this only after refueling (fortunately before starting the engine), since it was only better visible from a direction in which I was unfortunately not standing during refueling. So we have directly times around a workshop to have the tank pumped empty and cleaned. Fortunately, the workshop was really eager and friendly, but it took a total of about 2 hours and we had to refuel a second time. Thereupon Lava Car Rental at least directly (after I had to send a picture of the key) said that they will pay the bill for the workshop, for this there is still the 2.0 rating, that actually worked without problems. The fuel bill I had to pay myself, for this I had in the panic when refueling unfortunately no receipt drawn, but also do not know if I would not have had to discuss long... With the beeping of the car we had now already resigned ourselves, because we did not want to spend longer somewhere in workshops and we had noticed that there are very small speed windows in which you can move, where it then does not beep - with fine feeling in the foot and loud radio it could then also be tolerated to some extent. With the defective airbag, we just hoped we wouldn't need it... Shortly before the end of our trip we had another incident: The rear door on the driver's side could no longer be closed, it remained open (no matter how hard you slammed it shut, closed it with feeling, pressed it shut and locked it - nothing could be done, the door was open, the mechanism that holds the door shut when it is slammed shut was defective). Of course, you couldn't drive on like that, the door would open immediately if the wind caught it or something. Park somewhere and move away from the car, of course, also did not work, it could have anyone open the car (or the wind would have already opened it to the person). Fortunately, this happened to us at our accommodation and then still in the quite early afternoon (15.30), so I hoped that someone could come quickly and fix the whole thing. So I wrote directly, but no answer came. The next morning then directly very early I dug deeper, because we had to leave the hotel. The answer came then again very directly that there is a workshop in the vicinity, which is requested to take care of it to which we should then drive (I had written that we can not drive, because the door is open, but that only incidentally). 3 hours later I still had no answer, but we had to leave the accommodation in an hour ... On demand then the answer that we can drive now to the workshop. I didn't feel like discussing any longer that driving with the door open would be a bit difficult, so I just kept the door closed with my hand while driving and hoped that wouldn't cause any problems on the half hour drive.... Arrived at the workshop (here they were again very nice), they tried to solve the problem, but even after half an hour and complete disassembly of the door, there was only the solution: it would have to install a new lock. The mechanic called Lava Car Rental to tell them the problem and at the end of the phone call told us that we would then be contacted by Lava Car Rental now to discuss how to proceed. Of course nothing happens again! So I called and complained that we have not booked a vacation to visit the garages of the country and just waiting for answers from Lava Car Rentals. The discussion was relatively one-sided and the result was that we now have to wait at least two hours until a driver comes - and then they just hung up. We bridged the further two and a half hours in a Lava Museum, which was interesting and entertaining, but actually not on our list... The replacement car was then a Dacia Duster, which we would have liked at the beginning: relatively new (although already 160000 km down), with GPS and without any annoying noises. So there are the reasonable cars at Lava Car Rental! Unfortunately, our trip was now already over and we had booked two more nights in Reykjavik - so you don't really need a good car for that anymore... But I would now like to add to this negative review that I think it is due to one person in this store. The guy seems to be absolutely overwhelmed with the job, while the actual driver for the shuttle was very eager and also the young blond man who brought us the replacement vehicle made a reasonable and helpful impression. Unfortunately, not the overwhelmed guy has accepted the car from us again, I would have liked to tell him a few bars... So we have spent a day and a half with workshop visits and a few hours waiting, which would certainly have ruined the complete vacation on a shorter trip, so it was at least "only" very annoying.

Unfortunately bad experience - poor logistics at airport pick-up - unprepared car (we waited from 01:00 to 02:30 at night for it to be cleaned and released) - the issuer convinced us that Platinum insurance was beneficial, otherwise he would charge us for all the scratches on return, we ended up with a car that would be difficult to find out which scratch was already on it and which was "new" - Normally we probably wouldn't have taken the car (driver's door blown off by a strong wind, windshield cracked by a rock), but what to do when you're falling asleep, you have big plans for a trip in the morning and there's no other car available at the moment... - the car was fine motor-wise and worked well for the entire rental period (a week)

It wasn't the car listed above, it was a Ford Fiesta. I was told it had blue tooth, it didn't or it just didn't work. No mention of blue tooth in the Ford Fiesta audio menu. The car wasn't maintained properly. The back license plate holder had been damaged from a previous user backing into something and never fixed. So after a couple of days of gravel roads and high winds the license plate holder disintegrated and the license plate fell off. Lava were going to charge me for this! But didn't because the GPS device they gave me didn't work very well either. I won't give Lava the lowest rating as the car did get me around but I will never use Lava ever again.

I was disappointed about their service. checking out the car at their office took 1.5 hours since there were many customers waiting and the employee was unable to handle all tasks. they brought us the camper and inspected outside and handed a key to us. That was all. I wanted to rent an inverter for USB charger but the cost was more than double price of the other renter and we gave up. There was no guide or explanation of how to use the things in the car. No instructions on how to use the car. it took about 15 minutes to get the answer to find out whether it was gas-run or diesel-run. The inside of the car was not clean. the sink was dirty and covered with lust that we decided not to use it at all. The broken refrigerator was not removed and was just taking a space there. There was unpleasant smell of urine in the car from the beginning and we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. The plastic tank underneath of and connecting to the sink was filled with waste water and we guessed that the smell could be coming from there (maybe somebody peed in the sink before). The plastic covering of the side of driver seat was broken and was not fastened by screw. It fell off from the seat once in a while and i was watching it all the time not to loose it which was annoying. The dashboard maintenance indicator showed engine sign from day 1 and we were concerned that there might be a maintenance issue with the car. That worry was with us all along the entire trip and we wish that they checked the engine before they rented it out to the customers. One day, we went to a remote campsite and there was no kitchen facility and we had to lighter. The lighter we found in the kitchen utensil's box provided by the Nordic car rental was not working and we had a lot of trouble to get the lighter. we contacted the owner of the campsite and, thankfully, the owner brought one from her home. Our experience with Benz Vito wasn't too good. I think that was not the car itself (it was a good car) but the Nordic Car Rental who didn't care about it.
