Rent A Wreck was great. They arrived roughly on time to our early am flight, they included a bunch of gear like a table, stove, camping chairs, pots, pans, plates etc. that other companies charge extra for, and the pickup and drop off was super easy. The van worked great the whole time, the heater kept us warm at night and didn't eat up the car battery as it was charged separately, and overall we would highly recommend them to anybody looking to rent a camper van.Evan • 17. Overall we had a good trip and we’re glad we decided to rent your camper van—a really good way to make the best of of a short transit stay. We only had a short time so couldn’t try out everything. The car was basically fine, however the insulation was missing on the passenger side of the rear compartment, and we couldn’t get one of the sleeping bags to zip up. At this time of year 4°C it might be good to have heavier bags — and it would be good to have bags that can zip together to make a double. We have bags like that on our boat in the UK. We also had to wait 40 minutes after the arranged time for pickup. No one sent us a message to say they would be late. - heating system works great!
- winter tires were perfect in snow compared to other people's rental vans
- lots of storage on the dashboard and above the seats for your gloves, camera,...
- It stated that there was room for 2 bags, so we expected storage room for our bags. That's not really the case (you have to put them on the mattress or chairs depending on wether you're driving or sleeping). Better to manage expectations and state this clearly. More storage in the back of the van would be nice.
- the cutlery, pot and pans were very basic (only one spoon, no kitchen towel, only one cup..) and it wasn't very clean. We washed everything before using it.. When we told them in the end they asked wether we had bought something and offered to refund it, so that was nice!
- Mattress is very thin (especially if you're sleeping on it for more than a week).
The service by Rent-a-Wreck is okay, but rather basic and not super professional. They were a little late when bringing us the van (because they had to put on the winter tires) and when we went to the office to return it there was no one there. We were a little early but never got a message saying we should call if we were early.. When I called there was a bit of confusion but in the end a really nice guy showed up and dropped us off at our B&B. Overall a very okay car for a good price!
We had a very reliable car. The cars are a little older than some other car hire companies. But the one we hired got all over your beautiful island. The representative who greeted us at the airport was friendly and informative. He set up the sat navigation and put in our hotel address. I was very impressed with the service I received. Great service, I liked being picked up from the airport instead of having to take a shuttle bus. The guy (Biggi I think) who picked us up was really helpful, friendly and clear. Your prices are great and I love the fact that GPS is included in the rental cost. I always think it's ridiculous how much rental companies charge on a daily basis for renting GPS. I didn't use it in the end as I used my phone but appreciated the gesture all the same.
I discovered a few days into my holiday that the front door didn't lock. I called and spoke to Jóhann who was really helpful, apologetic, put my mind at ease about it being safe in Iceland and said that he'd be able to refund some money which was very kind.
All in all, I had a great experience with you guys and will recommend you to others and will be sure to rent from you again on my next trip.

Car pickup and return went fast and without problems, communication fast and uncomplicated. The personal of Rent A Wreck is very friendly, prices are fair. The car was not old but with over 100 000 km already well driven and had some bumps and scratches. All damages were precisely documented so no problem. Auto rather economical, automatic transmission and 95 octane gasoline. I like it better than diesel.
Easy to return the car to the airport, unlimited distance as is what it takes in Iceland.
I will be going back with my wife next summer for sure.

Overall pretty happy with the car. It ran fine and did not have any mechanical issues. It did have, I believe, a malfunction with the TPMS system which caused the tire pressure light to be on for the duration of the trip.
The only other concerns that I had were that the car was supposed to have a navigation system which it did not have and that I paid extra for a ride to pick up the car at the office which was unnecessary since the car was already at the airport. Maybe the extra money went to bringing the car to the airport. Overall happy and would rent with you again. Definitely good value for the price I paid
Great! It was quick and easy to find the Rent a Wreck employee at the airport who walked us out to the car. We got a free vehicle upgrade since they didn't have the original car we reserved and it was absolutely adequate. Plenty of space and we did a decent amount of driving on unpaved roads and it held up like a champ. It was also convenient to be able to drop the car off at the airport at the end of our trip and be on our way. I wanted to rent a Suzuki Jimny. What a suprised in the airport when they told me that I have been upgraded to a nice Dacia Duster.
We pick up and drop off the car directly at the airport. We didn't even have to clean it, something that a lot of companies ask.

Very good. The car was excellent. Also, when I arrived early at the airport, Johann, the rep assigned to help me, was already there waiting for me. After filling out some simple and clear-cut paperwork, he explained the basic things to be cautious of while driving in Iceland and I was off. Not only was Johann super helpful at the airport when I arrived in Iceland, he had also answered some questions via email that I had about the car weeks before my trip.
Overall, an excellent experience. I plan on using Northbound for every trip.

Great -- the person who picked us up was very friendly and walked us through everything we needed to know about the car. Everything went very smoothly with Rent A Wreck. Somebody was waiting for us with a sign as I was leaving baggage claim, showed us around the car, then we were off. You just park the car when you get back to the airport in a certain spot after your trip and you're good to go! It's pretty painless. Everything about the experience with Northbound and Rent A Wreck was great. Northbound were easy to deal with, by far the cheapest company for hire in Iceland by well over £100. Having dealt with broker companies before in other countries I was hesitant about the service we might get from Rent A Wreck but they were equally impressive. They picked us up from the airport at gone midnight which was good service, gave us the car and satnav as ordered. The Suzuki Jimny, although old as expected, was in good health and served us perfectly. I was a little wary that the company was not at the airport and may be a little troublesome to meet up with the representive and go to the company to collect the car. We had a great exprience with Rent A Wreck and Northbound from start to finish.
Very responsive customer service. We forgot to add an extra driver and also wanted to add Sand and Ash protection the day before picking up the car, we got help instantly which was very nice.
Also, getting the car delivered to our Air bnb was a very good experience. Saved us all the hassle with waiting in line at the pickup office and so on.
On the day of leaving the car we were a bit late but the personal came and picked us up att the gas-station close to Keflavik Airport, we jumped in another car and they drove our rental car to the next customer. Great experience!
We got exactly what we asked and paid for. It's hard to find a cheap 4x4 car when travelling to a country you had never been before and so it was nice to find a good, easy website where you could find cheap rentals.
We had a great time in Iceland and driving around was a beautiful experience because wherever you looked the view was stunning.
I would definitely recommend anyone to drive around Iceland to get to know the country properly and see all that it has to offer.

The service with northbound was very good. All you rent is inside. Very good and helpful is the GPS-System. The car has some stone strikes outside but it doesn't matter.

Service and Handling was fast and fine.
The drive shaft (for back wheals) broke down on a gravel road outside a village - 2,5 hours later we could continue our journey. The help was fast, friendly and pragmatically. Maybe a shorter Service Intervall had shown the problem of the drive shaft earlier.
We were Rent A Wreck's first van rental, and they had fantastic customer service! While there were a couple kinks to work out, they were quick in fixing them and ensuring that we had a fabulous vacation! My experience was great. The price is not to beat and of course the cars are not brand new. I booked the cheapest class and got an old Nissan. It had seen its share of the Icelandinc weather which meant less stress for me that I would make any optic damage. The seats could be made to flat surface so that two people could sleep in the car if necessary. This car did everything without complaining once and the roads in Iceland are really not the most carfriendly. I need to reduce a few points from my rating because I never recieved a final concluding message of Rent a Wreck that everything is ok with the returned car and the 3 times I went to the office to ask something, nobody was there. This car worked out very well for our journey. Although we did pick the cheapest option, I felt that the car didn't need to be super special for what we were going to do. We started along the Ring Road and extended some of our adventures to places like Borgarfjörður Eystri, Þórshöfn, and Siglufjörður. We did not take the car on any F-Roads, but did find quite a bit of gravel and other dirt roads. This just meant taking it slower and easier.
The car was just enough space for two people and camping gear. I would recommend the same vehicle for anyone interested in doing a similar trip.
It was a good experience. A little more training about the specific car would have been good, as I do not have the same type of "reverse" button on my 5 speed manual transition car in America. Also, the gas cap would not open at the gas station, and the attendant at the gas station had to assist with this; and we were able to get it to open. It was pretty good! I believe that I got what I paid for - because it was pretty cheap compared to some of the other cars that I was looking at. I guess what I am trying to say is that the guy who picked us up was a little late, the car was on empty when he handed over the keys, the exterior was a little beat up, including the fact that the driver door didn't shut all the way, the GPS was broken and the rental company didnt have a backup (but we were going to use a map anyway) - But we are a bunch of poor recent college grads and for what we paid for, it was great! The car ran well - though the car said it was 4x4 the actual instructions said not to take it on the f roads - which was a little disappointing. So I am not sure I would advertise it as four-wheel drive. Also I would check with rent a wreck on the insurance. It was a little complicated when we got there, so I would make sure what you are advertising is what they offer.
At the end of the day, the car was exactly what we needed. It worked, it was big enough, and we felt pretty safe. We took care of the car and didn't do anything stupid (no off-roading, driving through rivers, or speeding through the ice). I hope that we don't see any charges for anything post trip - like I said, the car was pretty beat up when we got it but they had documented every scratch on the car. So I guess we will see.
The last thing I would mention is that when advertising the car, make sure there are instructions to bring a credit card.

We had a wonderful time in Iceland! Our Rent a Wreck representative (I can't remember his name, apologies!) was very helpful and responsive throughout the trip, which we really appreciated.
One concern: our van's space heater did not work. (The van we got was actually a Docia Dokker, not a Renault Kangoo, as we had reserved.) We called Rent a Wreck when we found this out, and he had to call the van company that he'd bought the van from (Touring Cars, I believe) to find out how the heat worked. Unfortunately, once we had directions on how to work the heater properly, we found that it still didn't work (the heater only blew cold air through the fan).
So, we concluded that Rent a Wreck had not tested the heating before renting this van to us (since they didn't know how it worked, and it didn't in fact work).
Since we were there in late September, rather than the middle of winter, it wasn't *too* bad sleeping without heat, but it was still not especially comfortable.
We would definitely recommend that Rent a Wreck test the heating systems before renting vans.
I did not realize name of the company was to be taken literally. Car was a wreck and some parts were trying to fall off. Car was delivered to us at 1am w/out any gas. It took us almost an hour before we could figure out where and how to get it filled up since pumps would not accept our credit cards. Imagine going through this hassle at night after a long journey and with another journey ahead of you. The vehicle performed well on all the roads we took in Iceland, including paved and gravel roads. We had problems with the locking mechanism on the car. The first night we had it, after getting to the campground in Vik around midnight, we were locked out of the car. Luckily, we were able to get in touch with Rent-a-Wreck personnel after walking to a hotel not too far from the campsite (our phones were locked in the car). Ultimately, the problem was that the battery on the remote had died. We were lucky that a gas station near the campsite had the correct battery (the host at the campsite drove us to the gas station). A MAJOR design flaw of this vehicle is that the ignition key DOES NOT open the vehicle doors. All of the problems could have been avoided if we could have used the key to open the doors when the remote died. Rent-a-Wreck needs to give it customers detailed information about the pitfalls of the locking system and instruct them ahead of time what to try if the remote fails to unlock the doors. They also need to ALWAYS give a spare battery to their clients to have on their person when they are outside of the locked car in case the remote fails.Ellen • 31. The car was sufficient for the whole journey. We had to wait about half an hour in the airport as the staff was preparing the car. The car was collected directly in the airport and the staff was very helpful to drive us to the nearest petrol station as the fuel has only left with 1 bar. We were told to return the car as what was original left. I was told to return the assigned airport carpark. I was initially quite uncertain but the staff latest explained to us there is camera and security control thus it is safe to returned the car directly to the car park. The car was ok, globally in line with expectations.
Pick-up at airport went relatively smoothly (we had to give a call to be said that the driver would arrive soon, with the intention to pick up another traveler who would arrive a bit later than us, which traveler did eventually not show up). But again, it is ok.
We have been told to drop the car at the airport (at 6 am), leaving the key inside the car. I feel a bit uncomfortable about that, wondering who would be responsible in case of problem with the car (theft or damage before you retrieve the car).
By the way, it would be relevant to send a message to the traveler to tell him that the car has been duly retrieved (in case the car has been left at the airport) and that everything is ok.
Lastly, we have been given the car with empty tank, so we left the car at the airport with empty tank, as suggested by the people from Northbound. I hope again that I will not be charged for that.

Overall our experience was positive. The car we rented was in good general conditions, very very clean and suitable for driving in Iceland in April under all weather conditions. The Staff was punctual in giving us the car at the airport. The only weaknesses of the service deal with the communication process: first, the car we received was not the Dacia Duster we reserved online, but was replaced with a Suzuki Grand Vitara. Albeit the car we received was equivalent, if not better, than the one we reserved, we would have appreciated being informed about it quite in advance. Second, initially we were instructed that we would have dropped the car at Rent A Wreck offices in Keflavik and we would have been picked up there and brought to the hotel in Keflavik; however, when we were given the car, we were instructed to leave the car at the hotel. Actually, the next morning the car was still in the hotel parking without receiving any communication from them. I was very pleased with the service from rent a wreck, they were very helpful and understanding when we were delayed returning the car.
The only problem was the car, it was a Nissan note, the car was very clean but the brakes were a bit uneasy and the windscreen wipers needed changing, obviously reduced visibility gave us a few nervy moments in the conditions.
Would definitely be happy to book again but would want to be sure about the car condition before i arrived

It was a really great experience, although I think that car was a bit more expensive than expexcted. The jeep was too tiny for that price. Our Jimny was a reliable car, which took us nearly everywhere on Iceland we wanted to go.
For this price it was in a good condition. Only the back door closed not so good, so that all the time the indicator light was glowing. Furthermore the fan belt was squealing very loud when the engine was cold.
But all in all, everything was OK.
Well, the guy who was going to pick us up at the airport, came just five minutes later than was booked by us, but he called me in advance at the airport, so we knew he was coming. That was friendly of him. We thought he would drive us to the office, to arrange the paperwork and the car, but in stead of that, he parked his car (with us in it), somewhere at the airport. We had to arrange the paperwork in his car, so that felt a little bit strange and uncomfortable. After that, we drove to the office and we saw our car parked outside, the one we were going to hire. The guy made some pictures of it and explained things about the damages and insurance (what was protected and what not) and he gave us the car key. He explained how and where we could left the car, after the hiring time has been expired. After that, we thought it was ok and he drove away with his car. We opened the car we were hiring and first we saw, there was no GPS. When we booked the car online in advance, there was written it was including free GPS, but there was no GPS in the car. Fortunately, we had our phones with GPS on it, but this was not as we had booked or had expected, so we were a little bit disappointed. Also, after parking the car at the end of the hiring period, we don't know if there will be costs charged on our creditcard. This gives us an insecure feeling about what will happen next. We just have to trust that everything will be fine, but we don't know. We are just back home since 3 days, so...i can't give a total image right now about the whole experience, because i don't know if everything is ok yet.Laura • 21. The pick up and drop off were easy and smooth, even though we arrived at midnight. The gas mileage was great. We drove the highway 1 loop around the country and it was gorgeous. But the car has some front end mechanical issues. On the unpaved or uneven roads/parking areas there is a loud clunking noise in the front end. We didn't notice it until we were out near Sellfoss, our itinerary didn't allow us to return to Reykjavik and as long as we were on the highway it was fine. The vehicle had a few issues - GPS did not work (couldn't type in certain letters); driver side passenger door handle didn't work correctly. Overall the vehicle was fine. The initial pickup did not work well - the representative was late (he did call) and he did not explain the return process correctly (the ticket he gave us did not work - we had to use a credit card to get into the parking area.Stephen • 27. Nice guy, Biggy, issued the rental. Size of vehicle fine for 2 of us. Right off the car made clanking sound when shifting but Biggy said he was aware of it and not to worry. It was just fine. We had a 4x4 Suzuki a long time ago for our kids and so we're not surprised at all. The doors rattled on the gravel,and had to be slammed to close but otherwise, all was well. First of all we got a Suzuki Grand Vitara as there was no Duster available. An automatic; We had problems with a door, and got a new one, this time a manual shift. Perfect service. The cars don't look to good but are technically perfectly sound.
However, we have an issue as the price of RaW and Northbound are not the same. We paid more than agreed on and have not yet gotten a solution.

This car was horible, bad direction, bad brakes, I really didn't feel safe. I asked to replace it, after a check with a mechanic n Vik.Then I received another one which get down with the battery, so afterwords, I was always stressed that I couldn't start. The car made a terrible first Impression, but was actually very good. As it was quite warm the road conditions were not very challenging, but the car did its Job well.
We did not realise that "Rent a Wreck" was to be taken literally. Again, the car was good, but we did not know that you are specialised in rentals of old cars.
Once we got the car it was fine. Apparently the previous renter brought the car back just an hour or so before we were due to pick it up. Your guy had a hard time finding where it was parked. That part delayed us an hour or more. He was super nice and apologized. The car was fine once we got rolling. We only did a one day stop over in Iceland so it cut into our time a little. Good service but rather crappy car. We didn't get the Suzuki grand Vitara, but a Nissan QASHQAI instead. Had to go to a mechanic twice, once because the battery (accu) was weak and the motor wouldn't start in the morning. The second time because a bolt in the suspension was loose which made an awful noise. According to the mechanic (who spoke to rent a wreck) we'd get a new car but there were no cars available so we had to keep on driving with that terrible noise. The guy on the phone was friendly and helpful though. However, we lost some precious travel time due to these inconveniences.Inge • 17. The Dacia Duster was transformed into a Suzuki Grand Vitara. Hmm ... Suzuki was Ok, but unfortunately a renter before us had damaged the right front door. So this door was difficult to open and close, sometimes open randomly ehile driving and also allowed some constant fresh air stream to enter the car. Also the 4x4 transmission was defect. Bottom-line: it is called Rent-a-wreck and it was a wreck. The upside was that we were never spotted out as tourists when parking the car, but even asked for directions and tips on Iceland ;-)Rainer • 04. We arrived at the airport and the pick up was not there. After 45 minutes, a guy came but there was another couple waiting for a pick up. We had to separate our family so that my husband could go pick up the car with the couple( there was not room enough for all). He said we would have a discount but we did not. Our invoice with North Bound was in isk but at Rent a wreck, all was in euros. We could not compare and be sure it was the right amount. There were lights flashing in the car saying one door was open, but it was not. There were no lights in the car. The key holder for automatic opening and closing of the doors did not work. In the begining It Wasn't very polite to be oblige to phone three time about the time of apointement. They told me twice maybe three time that it should come in a few minutes and after in a ten minutes and after it should be there. To cloncluate we wait for a ride to the office 1 hour in total. We were in a lack of informations. We were let alone waiting for some knowledge about the pick up time to rent à wreck office. We were so anxious and disappointed.
During formalities of renting car it Was so different we don't check fuel. For the return we Just have to let the car into a parking at the airport without any checking.
But however it Was à good car and we had a good journey.
I think rent a car need more organisation.
First thing, we got a dirty car. We would have had to wait, to get it cleaned.
Then he told us, we have to drive carefull, otherwise the car will tilt to the side - we rented a 4x4...
We got no instructions, how to drive to the Highland.
The windshield whipers in the back were broken, the ones in front dident work well.
All together, a very bad car we wouldnt recommend, especially not for the Highland.
We met other people with 4x4 cars with much higher quality with lower rental prices.
The Jimny was laughably bad--a wreck, no kidding. The front suspension was unstable and in desperate need of new shocks and springs to eliminate the dangerous sway. The plastic trim along the running boards on both doors was not attached, came off, needed to be stowed in the back seat. The extra money paid for a GPS bought us a device that had one language option--French--which neither I nor my traveling companion speak, so it was useless to us. The vehicle had a good engine and managed hills well. When we picked up the car, the right rear tire was under-inflated and the Rent-A-Wreck guy said his co-worker had put a new valve stem in the previous day, all we needed to do was find a gas station and fill the tire with air. Ha! We went to several gas stations and found no air, and finally found a tire repair shop. We were in good spirits and just laughed it all off as a twist of fate, nicknamed our vehicle "the beast", and made the best of it.Terrence • 25. I was hopeful when I saw the positive reviews for Rent a Wreck on the northbound website, but don't be mistaken. You really are getting terrible cars. Our first car was swapped half way though our trip from what sounded like bad bearings or a really poorly misaligned brake. Either way we felt it was not safe to drive any longer and we're concerned that we would get stranded somewhere. I will say that rent a wreck worked hard to swap us out for a new vehicle, but not until I had contacted them multiple times, which is the only reason they aren't getting a flat 1 star. Upon receiving the second car, which was supposed to be approved for F road usage (I should note that this car had less clearance than our previous one, but was newer) started sounding like there were loose bolts jostling around in the engine on the second day of our drive. I should mention that we never did any hard driving...a couple of gravel roads, but 98% paved. I didn't ever feel 100% confident in these cars and I will not rent from them again if I ever return to Iceland. The car rental company was not waiting for us at the airport door. Moreover, when they came to pick us up they came with a 5 pax car so 1 people of the group couldn't fit in the car and had to wait at the airport. The staff of rent a wreck are very nice and friendly, but we had issues with the vehicles. The first Hyundai i30 (which had 270,000km on it) we received was given to us with extremely bald tires. The cords were showing through in parts (rubber totally gone), and the rest of the rubber was as bald as a balloon. I personally feel it extremely neglectful of them to have sent us out in a car with tires this bald, considering it was heading into winter season and we were likely to encounter frosted roads (which we did). The car was supposed to have winter tires on it, according to my booking. This vehicle also had issues with the keyfob, and we were locked out of the vehicle for 10-15 minutes at a time as we tried to get it to unlock. The physical key didn't fit into the door lock either.
About halfway through our trip we were able to swap to another Hyundai i30 which overall was in better condition, though the e-brake was not functional.
I would not rent from Rent A Wreck again.
My experience was very displeasing. I was not picked up on time. I had to call the company 3 times before anyone answered, and then waited over an hour at the airport for pick up. Moreover, drop off of the car was convoluted. I arrived back to the US and found myself slammed with a $2000 charge with no explanation, documentation, etc. Would not use again.Alexander • 27. No amount is withheld from your credit card in those cases.
