Northern Lights Car Rental
Résumé des avis
Généré par l'IA sur la base de 12 mois d'avis
Most travelers were happy with Northern Lights Car Rental, giving generally good ratings and saying their trips went smoothly. Cars are often older and well used, but they usually run reliably.
- • People often mention very friendly, helpful staff and cars in solid working condition for driving around Iceland.
- • A few guests mention longer waiting times, especially for airport drop-off, and say some cars look quite worn. One guest also wished the fuel discount and similar details were explained more clearly at pickup.

"The car had it’s mechanical issues which I reported to the rental’s office but it took all around Iceland and back home so with some maintenance it will be great"

"So basically your team couldn’t see the amount we already paid when we booked the car. And to make matters worse the amount was way higher than the amount we had on our voucher. We had to pay 26852isk more than what is written on our voucher. How can anyone explain that? You basically reflected a lower price and then when your on the day you take possession of the car the price is different. I do not recommend your company."

"Car was good, clean and comfortable. We were provided instruction that a company representative will be waiting at the airport, but we had to wait 45-50 min. before anyone showed up. We called multiple times on the given no. but it was replied only once. They took us to pick-up location 7-8Kms. away from airport, where we got the car keys after signing some papers. Drop-off was more smooth. The company representative checked the car and then gave us the go ahead, without any remarks."

"Ok for service. Understood change of car. Found charge of full insurance not relevant to hire of the car. Nearly 2x the rent of the car. After all, car had some visible damage after all."

"Due to a malfunctioning rear windshield whiper, the staff gave us a free upgrade. That was much appreciated!"

"We liked the car in general but it had two major maintenance issues that should have been fixed before we ever rented the car (red Subaru with license plate # FV-B01). 1) The front and back windshield wipers were really bad. The front was barely okay, but far from good. The back windshield wiper was absolutely useless. We needed to use it many times but the rubber was used up. It doesn't cost that much money to replace bad windshield wipers nor that much time for an employee to check the most basic car maintenance-- especially in Iceland with the constant bad weather. 2) The passenger side back window broke and STAYED DOWN three times on our one-week trip. We were three in the car so someone was always sitting in the back seat. Usually it was my 83-year old mother on her first trip to Iceland who had to put up with us driving hours with the window fully down and the wind and freezing cold blowing directly in her face. And imagine the awful road noise. After some time we'd push the window button again and it would all of a sudden work. This happened three times, each time it stayed down for a few hours, not working. This is a huge liability and stressor! After the third time we did not use the window anymore (only about 1/4 of the way into our trip around the island). Imagine our stress. We were far from Keflavik. It was also very annoying and frustrating not to be able to lower the window to take pictures of the lovely countryside. A few times my mom forgot about the broken window and rolled it down and it got stuck yet again. Besides these two major issues, the staff was not good. The young Polish girl upon checking out the car was fine. She was nice although I wish she would've told us about using the key chain to get a discount at the N1 gas stations. We accidentally figured it out halfway through our trip. It seems a good customer service employee would tell customers this important and helpful information. The Russian (?) or Polish (?) man who picked us up on 22/4 at KEF was terrible. We waited over an hour in the airport for him to pick us up. I had to call twice. The first time I called he hung up on me-- literally. I was still talking and he just hung up the phone on me while I was still talking! Beyond rude. I followed the exact instructions on the confirmation page I received via email, to wait by an ATM near the baggage claim area, which we did, and no one ever came. We each walked around multiple times in multiple areas of the airport and no one was holding a "Northern Lights" sign like the email said. Nothing was as it was supposed to be as written on my email confirmation. When I called, the Polish/Russian (?) man again he said he'd be right there in just a few minutes but never came. After waiting about another half hour or so I called back and asked him not to hang up on me again. He just wanted to get off the phone and not listen to me ask where we were supposed to be. I told him to call me when he arrived back at the airport and when he finally did, he was at a totally different place than where we were told to go. Very frustrating and we lost a lot of precious and unnecessary time for no reason. Upon returning the car, the staff at the counter acted like they hated their jobs and could not be bothered by customers. That was the attitude we got. Insolence. I don't think they were Icelanders. I think maybe customer service is different in their countries? I told the young man at the counter twice about the passenger back car window staying down and being stuck and he did not even acknowledge that I had spoken. No response at all. No thank you, no "we'll fix it," nothing. That's why I said it twice thinking maybe he didn't hear me. You'd think he would have been thankful for that key information so they could fix the car and prevent this horrible thing happening again to the next unlucky tourist who got this car. In the U.S. we are used to good customer service generally. Even if it's "fake," we put some sort of a smile on and try to be helpful to customers. It's truly how companies stay in business in the U.S. I don't think that's the case in Iceland or at least at Northern Lights Car Rental. I would never rent here again because of how poorly we were treated by the staff--rudely and like we were an imposition to their day. I liked the lower price for the older (yet dirty!) cars, but the bad customer service is not worth it for me. Next time I would pay a little more money and rent from a reputable national chain company like Sixt, Avis, Hertz or Europcar with better customer service. If I were the manager of Northern Lights I would get rid of the rude foreigners and hire some Icelanders with good customer service skills (even though they probably cost more money in wages)-- or teach the Polish/Russian/Serbs/Croatians (?) proper customer service skills. And finally-- the car we got was dirty inside. Like dirty. Stains on the seats, old gross french fries floating around the front area. I knew it would be an older car which is fine but it didn't have to be dirty with other people's trash swimming around. The staff also need to be trained on how to vacuum out and clean car interiors I feel. Or have a supervisor to quality check. Staff need more training and/or supervision that they're doing their jobs correctly and well- because they weren't at least when we were there."

"First of all, i was not offered a Subaru but a Suzuki S cross. This car already had major damages. After heated argument with the supervisor, they offered me Mitshubhishi Eclipse which also has cracks on windscreen and on body. Overall, i was very disappointed with the conditions of the cars and how they are delivered. I felt it was not fair with me compared to price what i paid for the complete booking."

"We actually got no Jeep but a Suzuki. It worked, at least it drove us safely around Iceland. Booking the car was easy. Only remark on Northbound is that we booked with a full protection via RentalCover, but Northern Light cars where we got our car strongly advised us to take an extra insurance on sand and ash damage (extra kost around 24000ISK). It was a quick win for Northern Lights on tourists because this makes it a double insurance."

"We booked a Subaru 4WD but were given a Suzuki with AWD. Immediately the car had sensor issues but we were assured that happens with all the cars in the cold, so we rolled with it. Throughout the week we had the car it experienced consistent electrical/computer system issues, which didn’t derail our trip but was inconvenient."
