Borgarvirki

A Viking fortress!
Located on Vatnsnes Peninsula in North-West Iceland, standing at 10-15m high and 177 metres above sea-level, this columnar basalt fortress and volcanic plug is a must see!

The sagas say that Borgarvirki was used as a defence by the Viking military when the chieftains of Borgarfjörður attacked them in the 13th century.

On the top of Borgarvirki is a dial (or 'hringsjá' in Icelandic) showing the names of the mountains in the local area.
