Heiðmörk

Heiðmörk is a vibrant recreational area, situated in the south-east outskirts of Reykjavík, around 18km from the city centre. Its most prominent features are the Rauðhólar or 'Red Hills´which are the remnants of pseudocrater clusters in Elliðaárhraun lava field.

The name ´Heiðmörk´derives from its Norwegian namesake and has been a conservation area since 1950. The vegetation on the land has flourished since its closing in 1950, and over 4 million plants have been planted in the years that followed.

Heiðmörk isn't just a popular location for locals, it's also popular for birds. Over 30 species have been spotted in the area in recent years.
