Fine
The car was OK. It could have used a good cleaning, a headlight was out when we received it, and the car had some rattling while driving. It drove OK, however. The more concerning thing was that the child safety seat Ice rental 4x4 provided was terrible. NONE of the car seats they had would pass any kind of safety standard in any country - they were all 15+ years old, dirty, in poor shape.

The initial pick up was a mess. No one was there to shuttle us upon arrival despite clearly communicating our time of arrival. I had to turn on my cell roaming to call the shuttle driver, and he took his sweet time getting there. When he did get to the airport, about 5 other groups needed transport so he only took the drivers to the rental place. I had to go back to the airport to pick up my companion. The car itself, however, was in decent shape, and we completed the ring road without any problems.

My experience with Icerental 4x4 was frustrating. Upon arriving, I was told there would not be room for my party to travel together in their shuttle to the rental facility (15-minutes away) and that they would need to wait at the airport. My party was my wife, two babies, & I. Following a long international flight, being left in a foreign airport with no means of communication with two young children was not a good start.
When we arrived I asked the representative if chains, a tow strap or shovel was available. He was very short tempered and seemed offended that I asked, despite the fact that it was snowing and that all main roads in the south on road.is were blue, orange, white or closed. Visibly upset, he told me that I "have no business driving anywhere that I would need them and all F roads are closed". As a first-time Iceland tourist, I naively took this to mean we wouldn't need them. I was wrong. We stayed in Selfoss and only drove the golden circle on route 35 and route one to Jokulsarlon however, over our 7 days, route one was closed twice trapping us at various locations over night. I kept a snow shovel from our Air BnB in our trunk and on four separate occasions was able to dig vehicles out who had gone off the road or high centered on drifts in the road. I would've been able to assist more if I had a tow strap. With a young family it was very frustrating not to have the right equipment for the weather and risk the possibility of becoming stranded for long durations of time.
Our vehicle pulled hard to the right despite the tires being at equal pressure and smelled heavily of gasoline in the interior. Several others customers we spoke to at vehicle turn in spoke of the same scent issues and an array of other problems. Some of them attempted to trade in their vehicles for others of the same make/model and were flatly refused.
I would not recommend Iceland 4x4 due to their customer service and their fleets apparent lack of repair.

The car we hired from Icerental 4x4 had some serious problems with the headlights. The plastic was not clear and blocked a good amount of light coming out. In the 3rd day, after driving about 200 km at night and trying my best not to go off the road every time I had a car coming from the front, I contacted the company telling them the problem and asking for a replacement car. They asked me to go back to Keflavik and exchange the car, they did't have anybody to send to Reykjavik (or didn't want to do it). As it was already 10 PM, and I had to rest for the next morning's trip that started at 5:00 AM, I was forced to pass the offer and to keep the car. Although it was my decission, I felt like I was't helped as I should have. I paid in advance, with full insurence, so I expected they would come to me, not me to them on my own time and expense. Anyway, I would like to thank Northbound for the TOP service they provided, and Rúnar for his dedication. Keep up the good work! I would definitely recommend Northbound!

The car was fine - a little worse for wear (132,000km on the clock), but it ran well. The problem came when we returned it at the end of the holiday. At that point the Ice Rental rep identified some minor marks on the engine hood/bonnet. We do not believe that these were due to any actions on our part, but we could not prove this. These marks were superficial at most, and could without doubt be polished out.
Despite this, we were given a quote of 90,000 Icelandic Krona for repair (i.e. the cost of a respray or new bonnet), which we were in effect forced to pay there and then otherwise it was clear we would not have been given a lift to the airport. We are now trying to resolve this with our insurers, and I am considering raising a complaint through our credit card company.
Whilst the holiday was otherwise fantastic, this experience left a sour taste in our mouths. I would consider using northbound again, but will certainly steer clear of Ice Rental on our next visit to your beautiful country.

Everything was ok during process. easy and clear, they upgrade us with a better car.
However we purchased some insurance items splitted, and when we decided to take the car we did wanted to take some more clauses, meaning that would have been same price as a package that they had, however they did not want to make us pay for the price of the package but all items splitted what meant an increase of the price (35€ aprox) for the same product and it was a bit tricky
But at the end of everything process was easy, they were friendly staff and cheap price for good quality car I will not give them a better rate because of the tricky thing but it is recommendable indeed

The service we got from Icerental 4x4 was great. They were fast, professional and friendly. However, the car we got had issues with the windscreen wipers. It had contact issues, so it did not really work. It was quite dangerous in rainy situations, which is quite common in Iceland.
Also the door open lamp was on even we closed all the doors really carefully. It was really a problem, since I could not turn on the alarm until the car "thought" there were doors open. And it was really bad when I could not OPEN the car, because the car "thought" the doors were already open. I had to use the key at the driver's side and it was just pure luck we managed to open all the doors.
The check engine lamp was on, which did not cause any trouble, it just annoyed me, and I had to call them to make sure it was OK. Again, they were quick and helpful.
The car was not the most expensive to rent, but still, I paid quite a good amount of money and I got a fairly bad car. Please maintain the cars!

The Suzuki Grand Vitara + Roof Tent was perfect for our needs and we did not have any issues with the car during our trip. However, our experience with Icerental 4x4 was less than ideal. The shuttle from the airport to the car rental office was 1 hour late. While we were waiting in the airport I sent an email requesting the shuttle and we were informed the shuttle arrives at the airport every 20 minutes, which was untrue and unhelpful. In addition, we were charged for wind damages to the door car in the amount of $1,126, which, while we accept responsibility for the damages, seems excessive given the damages. In addition, we purchased the additional Super Collision Damage insurance, which turned out to be useless for us as it did not cover wind damage. We are waiting for proof of repair costs and are hopeful the Icerental 4x4 will continue to be communicative, despite our less than pleasant experiences with them while in Iceland.
