Great
Pros: great customer service, vehicle started and drove great, easy online reservation, easy dropoff, didn't fall apart on crazy washboard roads to/from Dettifoss where we got snowed on. Cons: No instruction/operator manual, tags expired in 2023, no insulation, heater didn't work or I couldn't figure it out, woke up to ice inside the van, no snow tires, too small for fat Americans

Outstanding!
I booked a Nissan XTrail and got a KIA Sorento. The change was OK and the KIA met all my expectations and requirements. The shuttle to and from the airport was very good and on time. The service from Lavacarrental was also very good. I had full insurance and that was good. A flat tire and a stone chip in the windshield were no problem, Lavacarrental sorted everything out without any complications. Thank you very much. I can definitely recommend Lavacarrental.

Fantastic!
I got a Mitsubishi Eclipse. A Upgrade of the car. But I think it's was an older car with over 80000 kilometers. Normally I booked a Car which is not older as 2023!!!

Fine

The Suzuki Vitara wasn’t available so I was given a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hybrid.

Good
We did not get the 2023 Vitara as they did not have it that day. We were given Mitsubishi Crosstrek instead. Also we were “fined” for not paying the tunnel toll online in advance. We didn’t know and were not informed either as part of the check in process (this was left out of the other tips for driving in Iceland) which left us with a feeling of being taken advantage of since the “fine” is really the company’s handling fees to take care of the toll payment for you. For reference, the “fine” was 2-3x more than the actual toll. The rest of the rental experience otherwise went as expected and all staff were very courteous.

Very Good
Hi - all went fine and had been nearly "perfect" but: at the pick-up we have see a nail in the tire and did not check the inside profil. We where told all fine as that nail is not a problem. What indeed was not. But all 4 tires have had no profile at the inside - completly nothing. This is something what can end in a hoorible crash due burst of an tire and such cars cannot be handed over. Good thing: you got 4 new ones as we recognized the flat tire and get it changed with a perfect support from Lava. So if this would have been ok - full amount of points. kind regards Juergen Rosner

Outstanding!
The vehicle itself was exceptional. The efficient ~750kms max range meant that I was paying similar $/L as I do back in Canada which offset the higher cost of fuel. The driving position was comfortable, however there is very limited ability to lean the chair back due to the divider between cab and sleeping area - honestly though, it forced me to correct my horrible driving posture! The mattress was good but the provided mummy style sleeping bag was a little tight for me at 6'3" and 265lbs. I should have checked this before departure and asked for a larger size. I brought a suction dash cam mount for my cell phone to run google maps as navigation. This worked exceptionally well as there is an integrated USB port in a small compartment above the driving wheel. Notably, I had a 14-day roaming package from Telus which allowed me to leverage Iceland's EXCEPTIONAL cell coverage - I had better reception in Icelandic Fjords than I do at home! The one downside to this van, and I only thought of this after meeting and talking to other van campers, is it did not seem to have a second battery off which you could run the heater. Therefore, I had to plug-in which was fine but just cost me a little more in campsite fees. The heater itself worked really well and kept me warm despite the ill-sized sleeping bag.
